Beyond the majestic Himalayan range, in the Rainshadow of the mighty Annapurna and Dhaulagiri range rests a beautifully mysterious village – The Upper Mustang. Very popular as the Former Kingdom of Lo, this mystic valley is also known to many as the ‘Mini Tibet of Nepal’, the ‘Last Forbidden Himalayan Kingdom of Nepal’ and even the ‘Mountain Desert in Nepal’. Straddling the Himalayas, the district extends north towards the Tibetan plateau.

The Upper Mustang trekking isn’t an ordinary remote valley trekking in Nepal. The entire area of the Upper Mustang -from the Tibetan border in the north to Kaagbeni in the south- tucks in a number of unique experiences for trekkers to feed their eyes and soul. From the panorama of Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, Annapurna and other marvelous range towards the south, to the trans-Himalayan climate (cool and semi-arid), and the Tibetan–influenced, pristine medieval Buddhist arts, architecture and exotic culture & tradition dating back to the 13th and the 15th century – all contribute to make this, one of the super trekking destinations in Nepal. It offers gorgeous scope for visiting Buddhist monasteries, the King’s Palace-built around 1400, temples build during the 15th century; opportunity to be a part of the very famous Tiji festival and observe the native culture in Lo Manthang and the very rare polyandry system. Trekking to Upper Mustang is also an alternate way to experience the Tibetan culture and landscape.

Opened for visitor only in the year 1991, this trekking is’nt possible without the permit. The adventure starts right from the world’s deepest gorge of the Kaligandaki region, following the same trade route (the bank of Kali Gandaki) used in the 15th century, traverse the treeless barren landscape, steep and rocky trail, high peaks, passes, glaciers, a series of 12 caves decorated with 13th century Newari-influenced paintings & Tibetan scripts executed in ink, silver and gold and pre-christian era pottery shards and the alpine valleys, into the world’s highest region of Lo Manthang valley. Along the way, you can also enjoy the lifestyle, settlement and hospitality of Thakali, Gurung and Tibetan people inhibiting the remotest areas of Mustang.

Day-by-day route outline

Welcome to Kathmandu – the capital city of Nepal. Today is your first day with Amigo Treks & Expedition. Therefore, we send one of our company representatives to receive you at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), who will further escort you to a tourist standard hotel. If possible, we also schedule a meeting at our office for the briefing regarding the trek followed by an introduction session with other team members (especially Sherpas and guides). Today, we also arrange a welcome dinner in one of the most popular local restaurants, where you can also enjoy the ethnic dance and cultural music along with great Nepali food. If your flight arrives late, both the meeting and the dinner can be scheduled for the following day. Meals included: Dinner (Highlights of the day: Nepali food, Cultural music and Ethnic dance.)

The capital, Kathmandu valley itself, is a big storehouse of exclusive natural, cultural and historical sites. Therefore, today, we take you on a few hours tour to the major attractions of Kathmandu valley. After spending few hours observing these wonderful sites, we again meet for a few hours to finalize your clothing and trekking gears (down jacket, trekking boots, sleeping bags etc.) required during the trek. The night will be spent at a hotel in Kathmandu. Meals included: Breakfast (Highlights of the day: World Heritage sites like Kathmandu Durbar Square (a historical structure offering architectural wonders), the Pashupatinath temple (a Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva- lord possessing the power of destruction), Swyambhunath and Boudhanath (a Buddhist shrine dedicated to Lord Buddha- Light of Asia. Optional site:Another World Heritage site ‘Patan Durbar Square’ along with other historical masterpieces like Mahabouddha Temple, Krishna Temple, Golden Temple and Kumbeshwor Temple.)

Our destination for today is Pokhara. Our guides will pick you up at your hotel and take you to the bus station. We catch a tourist standard bus at the bus that will head towards the west of Kathmandu valley and continue the journey towards the western part of Nepal, following the Prithvi Highway. We stop at two places for breakfast and for lunch and then continue towards Pokhara. On reaching Pokhara, you can freshen up and enjoy some time in the lakeside. The dinner and accommodation is arranged at a tourist standard hotel in Pokhara. The night will be spent in Pokhara. Meals included: Breakfast (Highlights of the day: Comfortable tourist bus, windy highway along the Trisuli River, breathtaking view of waterfalls, rivers, jungles, hamlets higher up on the hills, terraced field with seasonal crop, different vegetations, curious faces of people running motels, restaurants and lodges.)

Kaagbeni is the destination of the day. We start early, as we need to catch an early morning flight to Jomsom – the district headquarter of Mustang. Therefore, we will first be transferred from hotel to Pokhara airport, and board a plane to Jomsom. Once we reach Jomsom, we will be introduced to the rest of the trekking crew members. After a short pre-trek preparation, we begin the ultimate walk by crossing the suspension bridge at Jomsom following the trail along the Kaligandaki River, towards the northern valley of Kaligandaki. After walking for about 4 hours we finally reach Kaagbeni, which is also known as a gateway to upper Mustang. Kaagbeni is a located at the junction of two rivers and on one of the major ancient Trans-Himalayan salt trade path to Tibet. On reaching Kaagbeni, we check into the lodge and in the evening we visit the Kaagbeni village, Buddhist monasteries and Hindu temples located in Kaagbeni. The night will be spent at a lodge in Kaagbeni. (Highlights of the day: Aerial view of world’s deepest gorge, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna range, stunning view of snow capped mountains like Tukuche, Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri in the north and the entire Annapurna range in the south, an ancient salt trade path to Tibet, junction of Kak Khola (flowing down from Muktinath) and Mustang Khola, and interesting settlement of the people, monasteries and Hindu temples in Kaagbeni.) Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner (Highlights of the day: Aerial view of world’s deepest gorge, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna range, stunning view of snow capped mountains like Tukuche, Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri in the north and the entire Annapurna range in the south, an ancient salt trade path to Tibet, junction of Kak Khola (flowing down from Muktinath) and Mustang Khola, and interesting settlement of the people, monasteries and Hindu temples in Kaagbeni.)

Chele is the destination of the day. From Kaagbeni, we first walk up towards the northern valley of Kaagbeni and then towards Tangbe and Chhusang valley. We then cross few ridges and streams and leaving Kali Gandaki valley and Manangi culture behind, we finally enter Chele. The night will be spent at a lodge in Chele. Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner (Highlights of the day: Network of narrow lane, red and white washed houses, Buddhist monasteries, red, black and white colored Chortens, Apple orchards, buckwheat, barley and wheat fields, view of Nilgiri, introduction to Tibetan culture of Lo and Tibetan settlement.)

Geling is the destination of the day. Today, we first climb up to Taklam La Pass and then walk through flat terrain. From here we follow that trail that takes us to Samar village. From here, following the descending ridge we get to the large gorge, pass few Chortens, cross cool streams, Juniper trees and finally enter a small settlement - Shyangmochen. You can enjoy a few tea shops. You can also enjoy a cave – Rangbyung that is located very near to Shyangmochen. From here, we descend to (Highlights of the day: View of Yakawa Kang, Tilicho Peak, Damodar Hill, gorges, streams and juniper trees, Chortens, Rangbyung (one of the holiest place in the Mustang) a cave containing stalagmites in the form of Chorten, and the view of the extensive barley field.) Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner (Highlights of the day: View of Yakawa Kang, Tilicho Peak, Damodar Hill, gorges, streams and juniper trees, Chortens, Rangbyung (one of the holiest place in the Mustang) a cave containing stalagmites in the form of Chorten, and the view of the extensive barley field.)

Charang is the destination of the day. From Geling, we head towards the west and continue our walk through the driest part of Mustang, pass all the way through the fields that are below Tama Gaon, take a north turn and walk towards Nyi La. From here, a vertical descend will take us to Ghyami. We now cross the Ghyami River, walk along the Mani wall till the end of the wall and turn east and continue the walk till we reach Charang located on top of the Charang Chu canyon. The night is spent at a lodge in Charang. Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner (Highlights of the day: Driest part of Mustang, Ghyami- the third largest settlement in the Lo region, Mani wall-a sacred wall made by prayer stone, Charang Chu canyon, view of the Dzong (fortress) and Red Gompa (at the eastern end of Charang village) that are famous for the collection of exceptional statues and Thangkas.)

Lo Manthang is the destination of the day. Before heading towards Lo Manthang, we take a walk around Charang village and Red Gompa. Later, we ascend up the valley to and explore Chorten that divides the region of Charang and Lo Manthang. From here climbing a broad, windy trail will finally take you the first peek of Lo Manthang which is also known as the walled city. To enter this city we walk towards the only entrance that is in the north-eastern corner of this city and eventually enter the city. The night will be spent at a lodge in Lo Manthang. Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner (Highlights of the day: Charang village,the collection of exceptional statues and Thangkas at Red Gompa, isolated Chorten at he border of Charang and Lo Manthang, walled city – Lo Manthang.)

Lo Manthang is the destination of the day. Before heading towards Lo Manthang, we take a walk around Charang village and Red Gompa. Later, we ascend up the valley to and explore Chorten that divides the region of Charang and Lo Manthang. From here climbing a broad, windy trail will finally take you the first peek of Lo Manthang which is also known as the walled city. To enter this city we walk towards the only entrance that is in the north-eastern corner of this city and eventually enter the city. The night will be spent at a lodge in Lo Manthang. Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner Note: Entry fee is required to enter the monasteries, which is not included in the trekking cost and should be paid individually. (Highlights of the day: Gompas – Namgyal (local court), Champa Lakhang (house of God), Thugchen and Chyodi, ceremonial king and queen and their palace (4 storey building), Tingkhar – a settlement of about 40 houses, view of mountains and pristine Tibetan culture.)

Drakmar is the destination of the day. During the day the trail becomes very windy, therefore, we start as early as possible. From Lo Manthang we first change the direction of our route and head southwest. Continuing on an imprecise trail, we now walk past the irrigated field, before reaching Lo Gekar. The trail now ascends steeply towards the cairn located on a pass at 4000m. This pass is the highest point of the trek and offers the last glimpse of Lo Manthang. The trail now descends to Ghar Gompa. People visit this Gompa with hope to get their wishes fulfilled. On reaching Ghar Gompa we spend some time observing paintings and artifacts in the Gompa. We will then continue to walk until we reach our destination, that is, Drakmar. The night will be spent at a lodge in Drakmar. Meals icluded: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner (Highlights of the day: Ghar Gompa (1200 year old Gompa), carved and painted stones and statue of Vajrapani, Palden Lahmo and Guru Rinpoche, who defeated a demon obstructing the construction of the Shakya Gompa in Tibet, and rock paintings)

Ghiling is the destination of the day. We start early to avoid the windy and dusty trail during the day. We continue the walk towards south, passing numerous caves on the way. We also pass the long Mani wall and the pass as the trail descends to Ghami village. From here we take a short ascent to Ghiling hill and down to Ghiling village. Around the evening, we stroll around the settlement of Ghiling. The night will be spent at a lodge in Ghiling. Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner (Highlights of the day: Numerous caves on the way, long Mani wall and a pass, Ghami village and Geling village and uphill and downhill trail)

Chhuksang is the destination of the day. After breakfast, leaving Ghiling, we begin our walk towards Chhuksang, which is an easy descend for about 5-6 hour. The trail is just amazing. You can enjoy spectacular land, amazing hills and tremendous views of the Himalayan peaks. Additionally, a few villages portraying the Tibetan lifestyle also accompany you, while walking down to Chhuksang. The evening can be spent strolling the settlement of Chhuksang. The night will be spent in a lodge in Chhuksang. Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner (Highlights of the day: View of Yakawa Kang, Tilicho Peak, Damodar Hill, gorges, streams and juniper trees, Chortens, Rangbyung (one of the holiest place in the Mustang) a cave containing stalagmites in the form of Chorten, and the view of the extensive barley field.)

Jomsom is the destination of the day. After breakfast at Chhuksang, we walk down to the southern boarder of Upper Mustang – Kaagbeni past Tangbe. Tangbe shows the last black, white and red Chorten that typify Upper Mustang. Enjoying views of the caves on the west bank of the river and Gompa Kang we walk all the way down to Kaagbeni. We have our lunch at Kaagbeni, and now following the trail along Kaligandaki River we finally reach Jomsom. This long walk will definitely make you tired. Therefore, on reaching Jomsom, you can either spend your time celebrating the success with other crew members or opt for some peaceful time alone. The night will be spent at a lodge in Jomsom. Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner (Highlights of the day: Ancient salt trade route to Tibet, junction of Kak Khola and Mustang Khola, view of interesting settlements of people containing red and white washed houses, Buddhist monasteries, red, black and white colored Chortens and Hindu temples, a network of narrow lane, Apple orchards, buckwheat, barley and wheat fields, and the magnificent view of Nilgiri.)

Today is our last day in Mustang district and our destination for the day is Pokhara. Early in the morning we board a flight from Jomsom to Pokhara. 25-30mins flight between the thrilling Dhaulagiri and Annapurna flight will finally take us to the Pokhara airport. On reaching Pokhara we check into the tourist standard hotel where you can freshen up, take a hot relaxing shower and then explore the city. Pokhara offers varieties of options to spend your day. You can either take a walk around the lake or spend some time boating in the Phewa Lake, or you can simply enjoy restaurants, shops, internet cafes or bakeries. The night will be spent at a tourist standard hotel in Pokhara. Meals included: Breakfast (Highlights of the day: Aerial view of world’s deepest gorge, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna range, activities and day and night life in Pokhara)

Today is the second last day of your trip and our destination is Kathmandu. It’s a 7-8 hour drive before we reach Kathmandu, therefore, we start early in the morning at around 7. We follow Prithvi Highway, stop twice for breakfast and lunch and then continue towards Kathmandu. On reaching Kathmandu, our guide will take you to your hotel in Kathmandu. In the evening, we again meet for the farewell dinner at one of the best Nepalese restaurants in Kathmandu. The night will be spent at a tourist standard hotel in Kathmandu. Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner (Highlights of the day: Comfortable tourist bus, windy highway along the Trisuli River, breathtaking view of waterfalls, rivers, jungles, hamlets higher up on the hills, terraced field with seasonal crop, different vegetations, curious faces of people running motels, restaurants and lodges and a wonderful farewell dinner at one of the best Nepalese restaurants)

Today is the last day of your trip in Nepal with Amigo Treks and Expedition. If your flight is scheduled early morning, then one of our company representatives will escort you to the airport as per your flight departure time. But, if the flight is scheduled later in the evening, you can go shopping and collect a few mementos or simply hang around shopping areas in Kathmandu. However, if you are planning to spend some extra days in Nepal, Amigo Treks and Expedition can also make the arrangements for some other top adventurous activities that you can attend while you are in Nepal. (The usual day for a trek: Every day, our guides will come to wake you up at around 7:00-7:30am. In case of special days, our guides will wake you up early in the morning at around 5:00am. A western breakfast like porridge, oats, toasts, etc. will be served at around 8:00-8:30am. The lunch will be served from a teahouse menu at about 12-1pm. However, the lunch time can also be postponed on request. The dinner will be served at around 8:30-9:00pm. Your accommodation is arranged at a lodge or in a tourist standard hotel (subject to availability) where we stop for overnight. While you are walking, you can also request your guide to slow down and stop at the places where you want to take some snaps. After dinner and before going to bed your team leader will brief you regarding the next day’s schedule.)
